Red Cayenne is a medium hot variant of the Cayenne that can grow 6cm to 20cm long, they are one of the best-known chillies in the world and are popular in a wide range of dishes. As well as cooking they are most used dried and powered to be used in sauces etc.
One of the mid range heat wise heirloom chilli pepper varieties to grow. Pre-Columbian in origin and named after the Cayenne River in French Guyana, it owes it spread around the world to Portugal whose traders carried it around the world in the 15th & 16th centuries.
The long thin fruits are probably what most people think all Chile Peppers look like. There are now a multitude of varieties available with differing fruit lengths, thickness's and heat levels. Most grows 4 to 6 inches long, are thin fleshed and can be eaten green or golden colour.
They attain maximum heat however if they are left to ripen on the bush. Can be used in hot sauces or powdered to make cayenne pepper. 30,000-50,000 Scoville Units.
